The
Ancient Story of Skylla
Skylla was a beautiful sea nymph beloved by the sea God Glaucus, whom she rejected. In fact Skylla left the sea and moved ashore in Sicily, a place where Glaucus could not follow her. In his despair it occurred to Glaucus to consult the enchantress Circe to enlist her help in getting Skylla back into the sea. Circe replied, "if she scorns you scorn her; meet one who is ready to meet you half way, and thus make a due return to both at once." To these words Glaucus replied, “Sooner shall trees grow at the bottom of the ocean, and sea-weed on the top of mountains, than I will cease to love Skylla, and her alone." The enchantress was indignant, but she could not punish him, neither did she wish to do so, for she liked him too much; so she turned all her wrath against her rival, poor Skylla. She took plants of poisonous powers and proceeded to the coast of Sicily, where Skylla lived. There was a little bay on the shore to which Skylla used to resort, in the heat of the day, to breathe the air of the sea, and to bathe in its waters. Here the enchantress poured her poisonous mixture, and muttered over it incantations of mighty power. Skylla came as usual and plunged into the water up to her waist. To her horror, a brood of serpents and barking monsters surrounding her! She tried to run from them, and to drive them away; but as she ran she carried them with her, and when she tried to touch her limbs, she found her hands touch only the yawning jaws of monsters.Skylla was a beautiful woman only from the waist up, from the waist down she was a multi-headed monster. Skylla remained rooted to the spot. Her temper grew as ugly as her form, and she took pleasure in devouring hapless sea mariners who came within her reach. Finally she was turned into a rock, and as such still continues to be a terror to mariners.
The Modern Story of Skylla
Skylla, the product of two well known digital audio companies, is still multi-headed, but far from a monster! Skylla is a unique, feature filled digital audio and automation system that is designed for the modern radio industry, wrestling with the problems of multiple signals created by co-ownership and digital radio. One master system handles up to 24 radio stations from a single control point. Those stations can be co-located, or be located anywhere in the world. Each station is programmed by a “Skylett”, one of Skylla's audio heads. The audio can be AES/EBU digital, Cobra Digital to allow distribution over a standard Ethernet network, or stereo, analog audio for FM or AM transmission.
Switching can be performed on an individual station basis, or multiple co-located stations can be centrally switched with a matrix switcher to route numerous satellite and other audio sources to specific stations.
Skylla runs under Linux, the fast-emerging standard for critical computer applications that leaves the Microsoft Windows operating system in the dust. Under Linux, uptimes of units easily exceed a year with no rebooting or restarting necessary. Under Linux, every part of every system is easily accessible either locally, from your corporate headquarters, or via our technicians for quick trouble shooting operations.
Imagine data from your stations all displayed on a single screen that you can call up from any Internet enabled computer. You can tell that the stations are in good technical health, that there are no error messages or off air conditions, and see what is currently on the air and what is on deck. Click on any one station and plunge in to as much detail as you wish, including program logs, upcoming unattended recording events, network switching and more.
Skylla has been under development for more than 5 years by a team of broadcast engineers, computer programmers and radio executives with a complete understanding of all facits of the broadcast industry. Many people on the team have owned radio stations, others have worked as chief engineers and other technicians at radio facilities, still others have a deep understanding of radio programming and have worked at nationally known radio stations around the country.
The development team's background, while rich in broadcast history, is quite diverse. Many team members are employed by On Air Digital, Inc. of Dallas, Texas. On Air has been a provider of digital audio systems to radio stations for many years, and has developed software that excels in live operations. Other team members are employed by Smarts Broadcast Systems. Smarts is a pioneer in digital audio, and specializes in complex automation of radio stations, including full automation of remote broadcasts. Smarts, unlike On Air Digital, has concentrated in the small and medium size radio markets. This team has a vast knowledge of both the radio and the computer industry.
Skylla, is the culmination of all this expertise and all this development. It works well in micro markets as well as markets of any size, and can be custom fitted to your stations.
Glaucus, in ancient Greece had it right: “Sooner shall trees grow at the bottom of the ocean, and sea-weed on the top of mountains, than I will cease to love Skylla, and her alone." Countless radio operators and executives will soon be echoing his sentiments.
